Golf Club Distance – How To Get It by Scott Olewiler

In this article we’re going to discover the real secret to golf club distance and the reality of hybrid Golf Clubs. We’ll also examine at how club head speed is related to distance and how to fix the most common problem that golfers find with their swing.

Most golfers assume that the reason they aren’t getting enough distance from their swings is because of their clubs. We’ve been bombarded with articles telling us how hybrid clubs are going to fix all of our distance problems. While there is no argument that hybrid clubs will hit farther than standard clubs, most golfers can get the same increase with their old clubs just by correcting their swing.

What typically happens when you add a hybrid club is that you now have one very expensive club that you’re not really getting the most out of and if you’ve replaced your original club you also have a problem with a gap in your range that you have no club to use for. Much better to correct your swing rather than buy a hybrid since a swing correction will increase the distances on all of your clubs.

So what is the real secret of golf club distance? You probably already know this: it’s club head speed. The faster you swing the club, the farther the ball will go all other things being equal. Obviously you also have to be making good contact with the ball with your club face, but that head speed is crucial.

We don’t want to confuse club head speed with how hard we hit the ball. Even though you get more power from swinging faster, swinging harder is not the solution.

Let’s try a little experiment. Imagine there’s a punching bag in front of you and hit it as hard as you can. Now try to hit it as light and as fast as you can. You’ll notice that when you hit it hard you actually pulled back a little right at the end to concentrate your power and your movement was a lot stiffer than when you tried to hit as fast as you could.

This same principle applies to your golf clubs. When you attempt to swing them as hard as you can, you tend to stop your movement at the point of impact. Your swing is also very stiff. When you relax your swing and swing faster the stroke is much longer and your follow through much smoother resulting in much more head speed. You will also make much more consistent contact on the club face.

So what’s the number one problem with most golfers’ swings? If there was only one thing you could change to get more club head speed and thus more golf club distance it would be your balance. Bad balance not only robs you of kinetic energy it also can cut your stroke short. Whether you lean too far forward or too far back, some of the energy from your swing is going to be wasted trying to maintain your balance during your swing.

If you can correct your balance problem you will automatically be able to address more of that kinetic force onto the ball and it should go farther. So I’m now going to tell you a great trick that I learned from Eric Jones on how to fix your balance in your stance. This so simple, I just love it.

Assume the normal stance you take to address the ball. While you’re in that position attempt to lift your toes, one foot at a time. If you can not lift either foot your body weight is too far forward or you need to straighten up a bit. If you were able to lift them, now attempt to lift them both at the same time. If you can lift both feet at the same time, then your bodyweight is too far back and you need to lean forward a bit. The ideal situation is to only be able to lift one at a time. Try this out next time you’re on the golf course.

There are many more things you can do to increase your club head speed and your golf club distance but we’ve at least tried to cover the major issues. Remember to watch your balance and always keep in mind that while speed equals power, swinging harder does not equal more speed. Keep that swing loose and you’ll be alright.

Ben Hogan’s pro-golf record is legendary. A four-time PGA Player of the Year, he celebrated sixty-three tournament wins and became known as a man of few words and fewer close friends. Most of what we know about Hogan has been based on myth and speculation. Until now. In the 1960′s, though Hogan’s competitive career was over, he kept the practice habits that had made him famous and remade modern competitive golf. He hired fifteen-year-old Jody Vasquez to help. Over the course of their twenty-year friendship, Hogan taught Jody the mechanics of his famous swing and shared his thoughts on playing, practicing, and course management–unknowingly revealing much about his character, values and beliefs, and the events that shaped them. In Afternoons with Mr. Hogan (which sold more than 30,000 copies in hardcover), Jody Vasquez shares dozens of stories about Hogan, from the way he practiced, selected his clubs, and interacted with other star players to his little-known humor and generosity.

Chapter OneGetting a Good EducationThe origin of Bobby Jones’s masterful gameIn 1930, Robert Tyre Jones Jr., a twenty-eight-year-old golfer nicknamed Bobby, won the British Amateur, British Open, United States Open, and United States Amateur golf championships. This sweep of all four majors, the Impregnable Quadrilateral, was a tremendous feat. In fact, I believe it remains to this day what esteemed golf writer Herbert Warren Wind, formerly of The New Yorker and Sports Illustrated magazines, called it, “the greatest single achievement by an athlete in sports history.” Jones had “done it all,” said ABC-television golf commentator Peter Alliss. This accomplishment was Jones’s reward for all the hard work he had put into the game over the years, starting at age six when he spent hundreds of hours hitting shots at Atlanta’s East Lake Country Club. There, Jones spent many solitary days perfecting swing and shot-making techniques he learned from Stewart Maiden, the Scottish-born golf professional Bobby often followed around the East Lake course. In 1907, when Jones was five years old, his family moved to a house about one hundred yards from East Lake’s second fairway. Initially, Jones caught the golf bug after swinging a cut-down cleek (4-wood) given to him by Fulton Colville, one of the club’s members. To satisfy his appetite for golf, practically every day Jones and neighbor Frank Meador Jr. played a two-hole course they had designed in front of Meador’s parents’ home.In 1908, the Jones familymoved to a second golf-course house where Bobby could again see from his window players hitting golf shots. By midyear Bobby had added a brassie (2-wood), cut down from one of his mother’s clubs, and a mashie (5-iron), abandoned by his father, to his bag.During the

In 1889, a young boy receives a complete set of handmade golf clubs from his father’s friend, the “Patriarch of Golf,” Old Tom Morris. The clubs, imbued with seemingly mystical powers, are passed down through the ensuing generations of the MacCoren family. In 1962, Ian MacCoren qualifies for the British Open Championship using these very clubs. While others scoff at the use of such ancient implements, given the evolution of golf technology, Ian’s game makes believers of the golf world. Opponents like Gary Player and Arnold Palmer test the youth’s steely nerves as he attempts to accomplish the impossible and win the British Open Championship as an unknown amateur. Even as Ian shocks the world on the golf course, family tragedy and personal disaster offer additional obstacles in Ian’s quest for the “Claret Jug.” Discover the birth and evolution of golf, the inception and development of the British Open Championship, and grab a front row spot in the gallery for the dramatic conclusion of Claret Dreams.

“Golf!” exclaimed Jessica Maxwell’s friend Rande. “I thought golf was for Republicans…and dorks!”Adventure writer Jessica Maxwell is neither, but she is a woman—and even today golf is primarily a sport for men. In fact, according to an unverifiable legend, the very name of the game comes from the words “Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden.” But Jessica loves a challenge, and when she decided to invade this male-dominated territory, she plunged in headfirst, the same way she learned how to ski and fly fish—two very demanding sports she took up in her early thirties after a life as a confirmed “non-jockette.” Surely golf couldn’t be that much more difficult…could it?Breezy and offbeat, Driving Myself Crazy is Jessica’s first-person account of her golfing education—the teachers, the theories, the mistakes and misadventures, and the confidence she feels once her game begins to improve. In this irreverent memoir, we get a front-row seat as Jessica struggles to learn golf’s etiquette, customs, and rules of engagement—from her first comical attempts to simply hit the damn ball, to the ultimate sign of arrival as a bona fide woman golfer… a complete set of Nancy Lopez clubs! Among those who help Jessica master the game are Peter Croker, a revolutionary teaching pro from Australia, and Cindy Swift Jones, his partner and putting guru, as well as Peggy Kirk Bell, a seventy-seven-year-old legend and one of the most famous figures in the history of women’s golf, and the queen of golf herself, Nancy Lopez. We also meet a gallery of other vivid characters from the fairways and greens, including the handsome “golf stalker” Graham, aman of mystery, wisdom and uncanny timing.Along the way, Jessica also visits some of the most beautiful golf courses in the country: the Robert Trent Jones Trail in Alabama, considered by many to be the world’s finest public golf facility; the scenic Whitefish Lake Club in

His Father’s Son: Earl and Tiger Woods

$27

A revealing and intimate biography of the man who influenced Tiger Woods the most-his father, Earl Woods. From the time he entered the public consciousness as a two-year-old golf prodigy on The Mike Douglas Show, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods has often seemed to be not much more than a ball-striking machine- reinforced by his carefully guarded image and emotionless persona. Even after his recent bombshell adultery scandal, the public still knows very little about the man behind the golf clubs and multimillion-dollar endorsement deals. But one thing is certain: Earl Woods, Tiger’s beloved and now deceased father, knew him better and influenced his life more than anyone. In His Father’s Son, Tom Callahan offers a full-blown biography of earl Dennison Woods, the Vietnam War veteran who raised the golf phenomenon and, in turn, a full-blown biography of Tiger. With exclusive access to and interviews with Earl, Tiger, and a host of other key figures, Callahan provides an unprecedented look into their lives and the remarkably close relationship they had. With unparalleled insight into the man who made Tiger Woods the person that he is, His Father’s Son is part biography and part father-and-son love story.

His Father's Son: Earl and Tiger Woods

His Father’s Son: Earl and Tiger Woods

$9.99

Mona Lisa’s Pajamas: Diverting Dispatches from a Roving Reporter

$24.95

High-class armchair travel at its very best! Mona Lisa’s Pajamas gives readers a round-trip ticket for a journey around the world, carrying them to distant destinations most of us will never visit. Originally written for The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg News, A. Craig Copetas’s delightfully surprising columns are now collected in book form for the first time. Covering exotic locales, improbable business ventures, artisan winemakers, and memorably oddball characters, Copetas’s vivid writing brings his subjects alive with richly-textured descriptions only a truly gifted observer can capture. From Sparta’s souvenir sword-makers swamped with demand thanks to the hit movie 300, to a Russian golf pro whose favorite clubs were built from the scrapped metal of a Soviet nuclear missile, Copetas writes of unorthodox business pursuits and faraway locations with an infectious joie de vivre and an unerring eye for what makes enjoyable reading. Unforgettable visits for the armchair traveler: -Israel’s Sacred Golf Course: where bomb craters have become bunkers -How to Succeed in Business and Avoid Serious Head Trauma: near Stockholm, a former British Special Air Services commando teaches executives how to survive a kidnapping -An Honorable and Ancient Solution to Boardroom Disputes: the 21st-century duel -Propulsion Is a Real Plus with Clubs Made in a Missile Factory: A Russian treasures his set of golf clubs—made from an old Soviet missile once aimed at the US -Da Vinci Code Fans Dig Up the Dead: Dan Brown’s devotees swarm a town central to the blockbuster’s story

From tiny country clubs tucked in the hills to dirt links dropped next to highways, thousands of obscure golf courses decorate the United States, and each one has a family of golfers who affectionately claim it as their own. In one enriching six-month period, Dave Marrandette navigated his motor home over 9,000 miles of interstate highways and back roads to find these gems. Riverbank Tweed and Roadmap Jenkins: Tales from the Caddie Yard By Bo Links

Riverbank Tweed and Roadmap Jenkins: Tales from the Caddie Yard By Bo Links

$16.99

For nearly as long as there have been golfers, there have been men walking alongside them, carrying their clubs, holding the flagstick, offering advice, smelling not so faintly of old sweat and very new wine. We knew them by their nicknames and little else; we called them Pinehurst Bill, Shorty, Rags, Preacher, Front Lip, Big Red, Fog City, Cemetery, Shotgun, Stovepipe. They described their profession in their own distinctive way: they shipped the trunk; pulled the strap; hauled the load. They were with us every step of the way — although, to be honest, they usually quick-hopped a few paces ahead or lagged a couple behind. But they were always there when we asked for help. We called them caddies.
Today the Caddie is disappearing from the emerald ocean that is the golfer’s territory. He has been replaced by machines that carry us and our bags down concrete ribbons or onto the greensward itself, by radar scopes that give us precise distances to any object, by meters that gauge wind, and by polarized lenses that filter out the sun and detect the slightest hump or ridge. But no machine can read a sidehill putt or sense the fear in a man’s eye when he’s standing over a short pitch across the water, when the cold facts mean far less than the confidence expressed by a fellowman who says, “Smooth it in there, champ; you got that shot.”
Caddies are the griots of golf, the storytellers who carry centuries of lore along with the bags, tees, and headcovers. Bo Links has listened to their tales, and in Riverbank Tweed and Roadmap Jenkins he has created two of the most memorable yarn-spinners you’ll ever meet. Riverbank, young Harry Tweed, is a boy searching for his place in the world and for a place to hide; Roadmap, so named for his uncanny ability to read a green (and not, as some surmise, for the capillary tracings in his aging eyes), has found his place on the fringes and in the shadows, where anonymity and invisibility mean safety and survival. Roadmap takes Ri

Dear Beginning Golfer,Are you intimidated when a friend or colleague asks YOU to play a game of golf? Do you suspect that business deals are being made on the course while you hang out in the Club House? Are you ashamed that you don’t know a bunker from a green? Are you wondering what is making everybody so obsessed with this game?Don’t despair – everyone started out just like you. Unfortunately if you’ve come late to the game you may feel your performance will embarrass you in front of your friends (or worse – your boss!). While golf is typically learned by adults you may feel ashamed to admit your lack of skill and prefer to avoid the game altogether. Don’t miss out on the fun and networking enjoyed by golfers…”Get on the Course and Give it a Swing!”But before you do that (and risk embarrassing yourself) why not start out on the right foot with a quick overview of the sport, how it’s played and how to make the right decisions (and shots) that make you look like an old pro?Like any other game rules and skill, and other variables, will affect your performance. Have you ever seen cartoons about a frustrated golfer? Be prepared – golf is as much a mental game as a physical one. Secret tips to control your frustration can give you an immense advantage, even over experienced players who let it get the better of them. What about clubs? Which one is used for which shot? Making smart decisions is what wins the game and that’s why pro golfers have experienced caddies to give them advice on the course – but you don’t have that. An overview of clubs and when to use them will show others you’ve got the know-how!Are you playing for fun or are you trying to fit into the crowd? Many business men and women enjoy networking over a game of golf. This is not the time to let nerves get to you or worry about how to get out of the bunker, what you really need is the…”Beginner’s Guide to Playing

Sam is dropped off at the municipal golf course with a hodgepodge set of clubs, limited skills, and the added responsibility to look after his younger brother. Once called to the first tee, he meets three playing partners-a well-equipped, rich kid, a profanity-spraying cheater, and an oversized, neighborhood bully. Getting to the first tee is the easy part for Sam. Making it past unexpected obstacles, facing up to conflicts, and conquering fears are part of the challenges he meets in a lifetime of experiences at The Schoolboy.

The Warhol Economy: How Fashion, Art, and Music Drive New York City (New Edition)

“Elizabeth Currid’s hip trip through New York’s production of creative culture is a tour de force.”–Quincy Jones, producer”I’ve uttered the words ‘It just kind of happened’ with a shrug hundreds of times when asked about the quick success of my band. Elizabeth Currid blows that lazy response to smithereens by showing the work behind ‘word of mouth.’ I think I’ll have a better answer now.”–Lee Sargent, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah”The old economy made deals over golf games and three-martini lunches. Creative New York organizes its networks around art openings, fashion shows, and nightlife. But these networks are a lot more than fun and games. They are deeply important to how new innovations are produced, how cities work to sustain creativity and turn it into commercial value. Cities drive our economies; creativity drives our cities. With her keen eye, sharp analysis, and detailed fieldwork, Elizabeth Currid shows us why and how. In The Warhol Economy, she has unlocked the best-kept secrets in New York.”–Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class”Elizabeth Currid’s The Warhol Economy raises distinctive policy implications: namely, cities will get bigger payoffs by supporting milieu rather than museum. Laws that hurt the clubs are almost as bad as the rising rents that price-out the artists. Tax breaks to corporations make no sense whatever. Currid is more than plausible on all these issues.”–Harvey Molotch, New York University”Elizabeth Currid has written a wonderful book. She shows that the arts and culture are not simply ‘service industries.’ Examining arts and culture in New York for the understanding they provide about deeper changes in our world, Currid addresses fundamental sociological issues while also engaging the general reader–with clarity, insight, humor, and passion. The reader feels taken along to the offices and nightclubs where some of the most creative people in New York gather.”–Terry Clark,

The essential follow-up to the BusinessWeek bestseller Trading Up A BMW in a Costco parking lot? A working class family with a 50 inch plasma TV? A 27-year-old Japanese administrative assistant with a collection of Coach purses? An 87-year-old retiree in Ohio exclaiming the value of Aldi brand honey? What’s going on in the mind of the new consumer? Today’s consumers can seem impossible to understand, and even harder to please. For instance, the average mall shopper will spend her $100, then leave when she hits that limit. She’ll probably buy shoes rather than clothing, because she doesn’t want to think about her dress size. And the store most likely to get her money isn’t the one with the nicest display or the deepest discounts… it’s the one closest to her parking spot. In his research with dozens of leading companies, Michael J. Silverstein has interviewed thousands of customers, extracting fascinating patterns about what really drives their purchase decisions. His first book, the acclaimed bestseller Trading Up, has taught a generation of marketers about the “new luxury” phenomenon, and why consumers will happily pay a steep premium for goods and services that are emotionally satisfying, from golf clubs to bathroom hardware to beauty products. But Trading Up only revealed part of the story of the new consumer. The same middle class consumers who are happily trading up at Victoria’s Secret and Panera are going on treasure hunts at Costco and Home Depot. And they are often getting as much emotional satisfaction in the discount stores as in the luxury stores. Silverstein’s new book explains how the new consumer approaches bargain hunting, and how even the most mundane shopping – for things like paper towels and pet food — have become an adventure rather than a tedious chore. It turns out that, in just about every consumer category, both the high end and the low end are growing and innovation rich. Many middle class consumers gladly spend $5.00 a day for a
