A golfer must PLANT his front leg post by shifting his weight to his front leg. As he shifts weight and posts, his back foot heel raises. Earlier is better. Early weight transfer is the defining difference between pros and amateurs. Then he demonstrates the transition weight shift in this video clip. Ben Hogan wrote in Five Lessons page 90 paraphrasing that we can focus on only one or two key movements during the downswing. He wrote, The HIPS INITIATE THE DOWNSWING. They are the pivotal element in the chain action. Starting the downswing with hips practically MAKES the downswing. It creates early speed. It transfers the weight from the back to the front foot. It takes the hips out of the way and gives your arms plenty of room to pass. Bobby Jones wrote extensively about this in his book, Bobby Jones on Golf pp 145. The duffer cannot do better than to resolve never to permit his club head to cross the projected line of flight in back of the ball. and The hips must be shifted quickly toward the front along the line of play.. From SLAP Swing Like A Pro, pp. 102, The transition move is what gives a great golf swing its undeniable sense of rhythm, grace, and flow. You’ll hit the ball farther than you ever thought possible, with less effort than you probably are applying now. Although the main purpose of the transition weight shift move is to produce power, it has the nice residual effect of allowing the correct swing path to occur. One of the main reasons most golfers fade or slice is because they’re unable to move the lower body out of the way of the upper body and club. The transition move serves to remove this obstacle by initiating an early power body shift toward the target.
