Arkansas Razorbacks: Arkansas Lady Razorbacks, Calling the Hogs $8.78 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Razorbacks , also known as the Hogs, are the names of college sports teams at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The term Arkansas Razorbacks properly applies to any of the sports teams (men or women) at the university. The Razorbacks take their name from the feral pig of the same name. Since the Razorback name was already in use by the Texarkana Arkansas High School Razorbacks, the University agreed to ‘use’ the Razorback Hog as their mascot; In turn, giving Arkansas High School used athletic equipment from the university. The Arkansas Razorbacks are the only major sports team in the US with a porcine nickname. The University of Arkansas currently fields 19 total varsity teams (8 men’s and 11 women’s) in 13 sports. The 7 men’s varsity sports includes baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, track and field; the 11 women’s varsity sports includes basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, indoor track, swimming and diving, outdoor track, tennis, softball and volleyball. Not illustrated. Excerpt: Jim Simpson (born December 29, 1927) is a retired American sportscaster, known for his smooth delivery as a play-by-play man and his versatility in covering many different sports. In 1997, he won the Sports Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2000 he was inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame. A native of the Washington, D.C. area, Simpson broadcast Atlantic Coast Conference basketball games in the early 1960s and worked as a sports reporter at WRC-TV. Eventually he would broadcast many sports at NBC, including football, basketball, baseball, tennis, and golf. For much of the 1960s and 1970s he was generally considered the network’s number two play-by-play announcer, behind only Curt Gowdy. His work on American Football League and later American Football Conference games for NBC is perhaps what he is best remembered for. In 1979, the fledgling ESPN cable sports network brought Simpson on board to provide some needed credibility with sports fans. Simpson broadcast the first NCAA basketball game the network televised, with flamboyant Dick Vitale as the color man. Vitale credits Simpson with helping him develop as a sportscaster. Simpson also called USFL and College World Series games for ESPN. After his sportscasting days Simpson retired to St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Among other firsts he was the initial U.S. sportscaster to appear live via satellite from Asia, and he was involved in the first American sportscast using instant replay technology. In 2005, ESPN brought Simpson back from retirement to do play-by-play for a series of college basketball games in a “turn back the clock” format on the ESPN Classic network. … More: http://booksllc.net/?id=4109416 |

Prior to that, the teams were known officially as “The Olive and Blue” and unofficially referred to as “The Greenies” or “The Greenbacks.” Tulane is a member of Conference USA in athletics. The university was a charter member of the Southeastern Conference, in which it competed until 1966. Tulane, along with other academically-oriented, private schools had considered to form the “Southern Ivy League” (Magnolia Conference) in the 1950s. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the university fielded NCAA Division I teams in 16 sports. As part of the university’s Renewal Plan some sports were suspended. Tulane currently has 14 Division I programs football, men and women’s basketball, baseball, women’s volleyball, track and cross country, tennis, women’s golf, and women’s swimming and diving however, they plan to field 16 sports by 2011. Continental Cup of Curling: Baldwin I of Jerusalem $9.8 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The Continental Cup of Curling is a curling tournament held annually between teams from North America against teams from the rest of the world. Each side is represented by six teams (three women’s teams and three men’s teams), and compete using a unique points system. The tournament is modeled after golf’s Ryder Cup. The event is held at the beginning of the curling season and is not held in the same season as the Olympics. Each side is represented by six teams – for the North Americans, four (two of each gender) are determined by the Canadian Curling Association based on recent participation at either the Canada Cup of Curling, the World Curling Championship, or the Olympic Winter Games. The other two North American teams are determined by the United States Curling Association. The World Curling Federation determines the six rinks representing Team World for the event. There are four main competitions for the event, and for either side to claim the Continental Cup, 201 points must be attained from these competitions. The first event is the mixed doubles event, a six-end game with two rocks in play at the start of each end (one for each team). Each team consists of two sweepers and two throwers, of which one man and one woman is to play each position. There are six mixed doubles matches, with six points given for a win in each match (or three points for both teams in the event of a tie after six ends). By tradition, each men’s rink is paired with a women’s rink to make two teams for this event, with each mixed team being given as the names of the two throwers. Prior to 2007, all 24 players on each side must play in either a sweeping or throwing role starting in 2007, sweepers were eliminated to create a true “doubles” game, and any sweeping … More: |

Excerpt: Charlotte “Lottie” Dod (24 September 1871 27 June, 1960) was an English sportswoman best known as a tennis player. She won the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Championship five times, the first one when she was only fifteen, in the summer of 1887. The family was wealthy enough to provide for all members for life; Lottie and her brother Willy never had to work. Besides Willy, Lottie had a sister, Annie, and another brother, Tony, all of whom also excelled in sports. Annie was a good tennis player, golfer, ice skater and billiards player. Willy Dod won the Olympic gold medal in archery at the 1908 Games, while Tony was a regional level archer and a chess and tennis player. When Dod was nine years old, two tennis courts were built near the family’s estate, Edgeworth. Lawn tennis, invented in 1873, was highly fashionable for the wealthy in England, and all of the Dod children started playing the game frequently. Fearless Golf $22.95 From the Publisher:A detailed plan for conquering the fear that sabotages swings and ruins psyches, from the pioneering psychologist whose techniques have benefited Davis Love III, Justin Leonard, and numerous other world-class golfers. As Jack Nicklaus once observed, fear is the golfer’s greatest enemy, inspiring Tiger Woods to refuse to give in to this debilitating emotion. It can turn professionals into jelly and dominate the games of most amateurs. It alters swing paths, causes tap-in putts to go awry, and transforms a golfer from a brilliant shot-maker on the practice range into an incompetent hack on the course. Most golfers understand this, but do not have the tools to overcome it. That’s where Dr. Gio Valiante comes in. A pioneering sports psychologist, Valiante has studied the sources of an athlete’s fear, investigated the physiological and neurological impact of fear on performance, and, most important of all, developed a groundbreaking program for conquering it. With Valiante’s help and by applying Fearless Golf, Justin Leonard went from three consecutive missed cuts to three consecutive top tens, and Chad Campbell recently moved from 98th in the world to 7th. Davis Love III went from zero wins in 2002 to four wins in 2003, and Chris DiMarco made the 2004 Ryder Cup Team.Emphasizing the need to replace a fixation-on-results with a commitment to mastery of one’s body and one’s mind, Valiante’s approach will not only help golfers reach their true potential, it will make playing every round fun again. Through concrete confidence and mastery drills, he presents specific ways readers can break free of fear’s grasp and perform at their best – even under the most extreme pressure. With detailed quotes and anecdotes given exclusively to Dr. Valiante from the best players in the game – including Jack Nicklaus, Ernie Els, and other tour professionals, Fearless Golf is the ultimate guide to the mental game, the hottest topic in g |

Pinball $46.99 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Pinball is a type of arcade game, usually coin-operated, where a player attempts to score points by manipulating one or more metal balls on a playfield inside a glass-covered case called a pinball machine. The primary objective of the game is to score as many points as possible. Secondary objectives are to maximize the time spent playing (by earning extra balls and keeping the ball in play as long as possible) and to earn free games (known as replays). The origins of pinball are intertwined with the history of many other games. Games played outdoors by rolling balls or stones on a grass course, such as bocce or bowls, eventually evolved into games played by hitting the balls with sticks and propelling them at targets. Croquet, golf and shuffleboard are examples of these games. |

While the game has multiple variations, the predominant version through much of its history was played with a full fifteen-ball rack , of which the winning player was required to legally pocket eight balls. A shortened version of the game using nine balls of which the players must legally pocket five for the win, often called “nine-ball banks,” gained popularity in the 1990s and 2000s and is the subject of international professional competition and televised matches.Rules Aim The object of the game is simple: to be the first player to bank five balls in any order (or eight balls, when played with a full rack).Rack The balls are racked in nine-ball formation (or eight-ball formation if using a full rack), but in no particular order.Play The key rule is that all shots must be banked (cue ball to object ball , then object ball to one or more cushions on the way to the pocket ).Bank pool is one of the “cleanest” (no “slop “) pool games no kick shots (the object ball must be hit directly with the cueball, without hitting the rail first); no combinations (shots must be cue ball to the object ball, then object ball to the called pocket, and the shooter must call both the ball and pocket); and the object ball cannot hit another ball |
